Anna University 1st sem first semester results 2013 News

COIMBATORE: The first semester results for engineering colleges under Anna University which were recently released, has disappointed school authorities, students and parents, as very few colleges managed to get even a 70 percent pass percentage.

One reason for the poor performance of students is the drastic change in evaluation and study patterns from school to college. Sudha Mohanram, the principal of Sri Eshwar College of Engineering in Coimbatore, which managed to achieve a pass percentage higher than 80 in the first semester, said that students should be taught how to adapt to the change from school to college.
"At the higher secondary level, students use rote learning methods. Engineering courses however require an understanding at a deeper level and analysis. Students need some guidance to change their approach to studying," she said. Counselling and individual attention is required to deal with this challenge, she added.

S Ramesh, a third year engineering student voices similar sentiments. "Often, students may not be aware of the extent of their syllabus and try to study during the last minute. Very few approach teachers to get their doubts cleared. With this kind of attitude, it is not surprising that the results are worse than mediocre," he said.

Meanwhile, college officials feel that the evaluation system is more stringent under Anna University. The principal of a private college speaking on condition of anonymity said that students of deemed universities that design their own syllabus and have an internal evaluation system were at an advantage. "These students perform better because the syllabus is self-designed and evaluation is internal," said the principal.

Many academicians feel that the university cannot be blamed for poor results. They say that the quality of students entering engineering colleges is poor. Many are incapable of passing the course to begin with, they believe. P Appukutty, the chairman of the PA College of Engineering and Technology admits that they received better results as they managed to admit students with good marks.

Though students can clear arrears in the coming semester, academics say that this can create problems. Many firms, especially the multi-national companies demand candidates with no history of arrears. Few firms do accept candidates if they have cleared their arrears. Thus, technical institutions must give special coaching to help students clear their arrears.
